Pieter Prinsloo's Dual Mission: Elevating REG and MBB in African Basketball
South African power forward Pieter Prinsloo discusses his strategic move to Rwanda Energy Group for the RBL season while aiming for BAL with Made By Ball.

Pieter Prinsloo’s Strategic Basketball Moves
South African power forward Pieter Prinsloo has recently signed with Rwanda Energy Group (REG) for the Rwandan Basketball League (RBL) season, marking a significant addition to their roster. Despite this commitment, Prinsloo has his sights set on representing Made By Ball (MBB), a Johannesburg-based team, in the upcoming Basketball Africa League (BAL).
A New Chapter with REG
Prinsloo, who previously captained the Cape Town Tigers and played college basketball in the USA at Marist Red Foxes, brings both experience and versatility to REG. His ability to stretch the floor and significant size make him a valuable asset. Nigerian coach Ogoh Odaudu, who joined REG after leading Rivers Hoopers to third place in the 2024 BAL, expressed his enthusiasm about Prinsloo’s addition:
"He brings size because that's what we have been missing and because he can stretch the floor, it makes him even more effective for what we have going here."
Prinsloo has already made an impactful debut, contributing to REG’s 92-58 victory over Espoir.
Balancing Dual Commitments
While Prinsloo is fully committed to REG for the RBL season, he plans to transition to MBB for the BAL. This dual commitment showcases his strategic approach to maximizing his influence in African basketball:
"That's the plan at the moment. I'm going to play for REG [until MBB's BAL campaign starts], play with MBB for the BAL, and then [go] back to REG to finish the season in Rwanda."
The Road Ahead
MBB, under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Sam Vincent, is gearing up for the BAL. Despite Prinsloo’s contract with MBB still being finalized, owner Cyril Shabalala confirmed Prinsloo’s inclusion in their plans. The BAL will commence on April 5, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, before moving to Dakar, Senegal, and Kigali, Rwanda. The finals are set to take place in Pretoria, South Africa, from June 6-14.
Meanwhile, the RBL season will run until at least late July, potentially extending into early August depending on playoff results. REG is scheduled to face APR in their final regular season game on June 29, ensuring a packed and eventful schedule for Prinsloo.
A Season of Opportunities
Prinsloo’s move to REG and his planned stint with MBB highlight his dedication to basketball in Africa. With his unique skills and strategic planning, Prinsloo is poised to make significant contributions to both teams, further elevating their standings in the competitive landscape of African basketball.
