LPGA Mexico Riviera Maya Open: Pagdanganan Leads with Stellar Performance

Bianca Pagdanganan shares the lead at the LPGA Mexico Riviera Maya Open, showcasing her skill in challenging conditions.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Bianca Pagdanganan demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience under the challenging conditions of the Yucatan Peninsula, securing a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th to finish with a 4-under 68. This performance placed her in a four-way tie for the lead at the LPGA Tour's Mexico Riviera Maya Open.

Pagdanganan, a 27-year-old golfer from the Philippines, excelled despite the stifling heat and humidity, hitting all but two greens. Her strategic play on the El Camaleon course at Mayakoba allowed her to join Chisato Iwai, Jenny Shin, and Brianna Do at the top of the leaderboard.

Challenging Conditions The wind and heat index posed significant challenges, limiting scoring opportunities for many players. Shin, who was the first to reach 68, expressed the difficulty of the conditions, stating, "I actually don't remember because it's so hot. I don't remember the first birdie." Despite the heat, Shin managed seven birdies but was slowed by a double bogey on the 16th hole.

Strong Performances Chisato Iwai birdied two of her last five holes, while Brianna Do started strong, reaching 4 under through her first five holes. Although she cooled off with one bogey, a birdie on the 18th secured her a share of the lead. Five additional players, including Hye-Jin Choi and Jenny Bae, finished just one stroke behind at 69.

Notable Struggles Charley Hull, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 15, missed several short putts and finished with a 72. Meanwhile, prominent Mexican players Gaby Lopez and Maria Fassi faced difficulties, with Lopez carding eight bogeys for a 79 and Fassi struggling to a 75.

Pagdanganan reflected on her performance, saying, "It felt like a pretty easy round, which honestly I haven't felt that in a while. To be able to have that out here feels really good." Her ability to maintain focus and execute her shots effectively under pressure highlights her potential as a leading contender in the tournament.

As the LPGA Tour continues, the Mexico Riviera Maya Open promises more thrilling golf action, with players battling both the course and the elements to claim victory.
