Bryce Young Empowers Youth with Mental Health Focus at Panthers Football Camp

Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young emphasizes mental health at his football camp, teaching kids meditation and breathing exercises for resilience.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, alongside his father Craig Young, a licensed therapist, recently hosted the "Young 9 Foundation" football camp at Johnson C. Smith University. The event, attended by about 250 kids aged 6 to 14, focused on the importance of mental health in sports and life.

Mental Health: A Key to Resilience

Bryce Young, who faced significant challenges during his rookie season, shared his personal journey of overcoming adversity through mental health practices. "Regardless of how far football or sports take you, mental health is something that will take you further," Young told the young campers. He emphasized that everyone experiences good and bad days, and mental health is a crucial part of navigating those ups and downs.

Practical Tools for Tough Times

Young and his father introduced the kids to practical tools like meditation and breathing exercises. These techniques have been a part of Young's routine, helping him stay centered during tough times. "Meditation is like a reset button for me," Young explained. Each camper received a gift bag with instructions on how to perform these exercises, ensuring they could continue practicing at home.

Leadership and Perseverance

Panthers coach Dave Canales praised Young's leadership and perseverance. "Bryce never stopped leading. He kept working and was poised for the next opportunity," Canales said. Young's turnaround in the final four games of the season, where he threw eight touchdowns with two interceptions and added four rushing touchdowns, showcased his potential to be an elite quarterback.

Support from Teammates

Nine of Young's teammates attended the camp, showing their support and belief in his leadership. Second-year wide receiver Xavier Legette highlighted the importance of mental health in the sports industry. "That's what helped him. He never gave up," Legette said.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Young, inspired by his childhood hero Kobe Bryant, aims to create lasting memories for the kids at his camp. He shared anecdotes from his own camp experiences and the impact they had on him. "I remember being six or seven and thinking $1,000 was the maximum money you could have in life," Young recalled with a smile.

Conclusion

Bryce Young's football camp not only teaches kids the fundamentals of the game but also instills the importance of mental health and resilience. "We all have our own journeys with our mental health," Young said. "You have to take care of yourself to take care of others and what you do for a living."
