Sacramento State Joins Big West Conference: A New Era of NCAAW Sports in 2026-27
Sacramento State transitions to the Big West Conference in 2026-27, enhancing competitive sports and academic excellence in NCAAW.

Sacramento State is set to join the Big West Conference as a full member starting with the 2026-27 academic year. This move marks a significant shift in the landscape of college sports, particularly in the NCAA Women’s (NCAAW) athletics. The university informed the Big Sky Conference of its departure and will officially become the 12th member of the Big West on July 1, 2026.
Strategic Expansion and Competitive Enhancement Commissioner Dan Butterly expressed enthusiasm about the addition, stating, "Sacramento State is a staunch advocate for excellence in academics, athletics, and community service. Their inclusion will undoubtedly strengthen our conference competitively and expand our geographic footprint."
Football Program Independence While the Big West does not sponsor football, Sacramento State’s football program will operate as an independent. The Hornets are currently seeking to transition from the FCS level to FBS and await a crucial ruling from the NCAA Division I Council. This decision could set a precedent for other institutions considering similar moves.
Commitment to Excellence Athletic Director Mark Orr highlighted the university’s commitment to providing student-athletes with opportunities for national competitiveness. "The Big West has a long history of national success in various sports, and we are eager to compete for championships and build new rivalries," Orr said.
Future Prospects and Investments Sacramento State has also made significant investments in its men’s basketball program, hiring former NBA star Mike Bibby as head coach and Shaquille O’Neal as a voluntary GM. These moves are expected to elevate the program’s profile and competitiveness in the coming years.
Looking Ahead The Hornets’ transition to the Big West promises to bring a new level of excitement and competition to the conference. With a strong focus on academic and athletic excellence, Sacramento State is poised to make a significant impact in the NCAAW landscape.
