Atlanta Falcons' Critical Decision: Protecting Michael Penix Jr.'s Blind Side in the 2025 NFL Season

The Atlanta Falcons face a crucial decision in protecting quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s blind side as three players compete for the starting right tackle role in the 2025 NFL season.

The Atlanta Falcons are in the midst of a pivotal decision as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season. With starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. being left-handed, the right tackle position becomes even more critical, as it will be responsible for protecting his blind side. Head coach Raheem Morris has announced that three players will be competing for this crucial role, with more potentially joining the mix.

The Injury Impact

The Falcons placed Kaleb McGary, their starting right tackle since 2019, on injured reserve with no designation to return. McGary sustained a leg injury during practice on August 20, sidelining him for the entire season. His backup, swing tackle Storm Norton, will also start the season on IR after undergoing ankle surgery, expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

The Contenders

Morris has identified three players who will compete for the starting right tackle position:

  • Elijah Wilkinson: A veteran with experience, Wilkinson replaced McGary in practice after the injury. He started 19 games at right tackle with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and 2020 and was the Falcons' starter at left guard for nine games in 2022.
  • Brandon Parker: Another seasoned player, Parker brings experience and versatility to the competition.
  • Jack Nelson: A rookie, Nelson is looking to make his mark and secure a starting role.

New Additions

The Falcons have also added three tackles to their roster:

  • Michael Jerrell: Acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick. Jerrell started three games as a rookie last year, including one against the Falcons.
  • Carter Warren: Formerly of the New York Jets, Warren started six games over the last two seasons.
  • Ryan Hayes: Previously with the Miami Dolphins, Hayes adds depth to the position.

Coaching Perspective

Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford emphasized the importance of finding the best five players to maximize the team's offensive potential this year. Ledford expressed confidence in Wilkinson, noting his athleticism and experience, but also highlighted Jerrell as a player who has caught their attention.

Potential Shifts

Morris mentioned the possibility of moving standout left guard Matthew Bergeron to right tackle, a position he played in college at Syracuse. This move remains on the table, providing flexibility and depth to the offensive line.

Continuity and Experience

Ledford stressed the importance of continuity, noting that backups like Kyle Hinton and Wilkinson have been with the team for years, providing stability and familiarity within the system.

As the Falcons gear up for the 2025 season, the competition for the right tackle position will be one to watch, with significant implications for the team's offensive success and the protection of their star quarterback, Michael Penix Jr.
