Rachel Malcolm Bids Farewell to Loughborough Lightning: A Legacy of Leadership and Dedication

Scotland captain Rachel Malcolm leaves Loughborough Lightning after a stellar 7-year career, marking the end of an era in women's rugby.

Scotland captain Rachel Malcolm has announced her departure from Loughborough Lightning, marking the end of a significant chapter in her rugby career. Malcolm, the club's longest-serving player, first donned the Lightning jersey in their inaugural match in September 2017 and has since made 67 appearances for the team.

A Storied Rugby Career

At 33, Malcolm's rugby journey has been nothing short of remarkable. She will make her final appearance for Lightning in their Premiership Women's Rugby season finale against Ealing Trailfinders at Franklin's Gardens on Friday evening. Reflecting on her time with the club, Malcolm said, "It's been an absolute wild ride. I've loved every second of being a Loughborough Lightning player."

Beyond the Pitch: A Leader and Mentor

Malcolm's influence extends beyond her on-field performances. In recent weeks, she has taken on a player-coach role, assisting head coach Nathan Smith. Her leadership qualities are well-documented, and she has been a guiding force for the team during her tenure. "She has been a huge part of all the club's successes over the last seven-and-a-half years," said Smith. "Her leadership qualities are well known across women's rugby, and it has been a privilege to work alongside her."

Looking Ahead

With a career that includes 52 caps for Scotland, Malcolm's contributions to both club and country have been immense. As she prepares to step away from Lightning, she remains optimistic about the future of the club. "I truly walk away from this programme knowing that I've given it every single ounce of my blood, sweat, and tears," she said. "I feel so excited about the future of the club and what they have the ability to achieve."

Rachel Malcolm's departure is a momentous event in women's rugby, but her legacy at Loughborough Lightning will undoubtedly inspire future generations of players.
