Daniel Dubois Withdraws from Joseph Parker Fight Due to Illness: Late Replacement Announced

Daniel Dubois withdraws from his IBF heavyweight title defence against Joseph Parker due to illness, with Martin Bakole stepping in as a late replacement.

Heavyweight Daniel Dubois' highly anticipated IBF world-title defence against Joseph Parker has been called off just two days before the scheduled fight. The champion fell ill, leading to his withdrawal from the event in Saudi Arabia.

Dubois, 27, was undergoing medical evaluation in Saudi Arabia and missed the Thursday news conference. Later in the evening, it was confirmed that he would not be able to compete. The nature of his illness remains undisclosed.

Late Replacement Announced

New Zealand's Joseph Parker, 33, will now face Congolese heavyweight Martin Bakole, who has been drafted in as a late replacement. Bakole, based in Scotland, has an impressive record of 21 wins with only one loss, including 16 knockouts.

Parker's Reaction

Before learning of the replacement, Parker expressed his concern for Dubois:

"If he is ill, I hope he gets better soon. I'm looking forward to Saturday and having a great show."

Later, Parker emphasized the importance of being in peak condition for a fight, stating to Sky Sports:

"If you're sick, don't fight. There's no point going out there and fighting your heart out when you're not in the right physical shape. Fight when you're at your best."

Dubois' Career

Dubois has a professional record of 22 wins and 2 losses. He claimed the 'interim' IBF title against Filip Hrgovic and was elevated to world champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt. His first defence of the title was a notable victory over Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in September.

Parker's Record

Parker, a former WBO heavyweight champion, has a career record of 35 wins and 3 defeats. He held the WBO title from 2015 to 2017.

Impact on the Event

While Bakole is a credible opponent, the change is a significant blow to the event, which was expected to feature a world-title fight. The co-main event still promises excitement, with Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol set to face off in an undisputed light-heavyweight title fight.

Analysis

Last-minute withdrawals in heavyweight boxing are rare, especially so close to the fight night. This marks the second withdrawal in fight week for what was billed as the greatest card in the history of the sport. Despite the setback, the event remains highly anticipated, with several top-tier fights still on the card.
