From Rugby Star to Life Changer: Matt Hampson's Inspiring Journey 20 Years After His Injury

Matt Hampson shares his life-changing journey from a promising rugby player to a beacon of hope for those with spinal injuries, 20 years after his accident.

The Life-Altering Moment

Matt Hampson, once a rising star in English rugby, faced a life-altering moment during a training session with the Under-21 national team. A collapsed scrum left him paralyzed from the neck down, a devastating injury that changed the course of his life. At just 20 years old, Hampson found himself in intensive care, unable to breathe without a ventilator.

Redefining Purpose

Hampson recalls the surreal experience of having his England jersey cut off him, a symbol of his pride and passion for the sport. "I was so proud of playing for England with the rose on my chest," he said. "Having that kit cut off me was a small trivial thing I was thinking of, rather than thinking of myself."

The Road to Recovery

After 18 months at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Hampson embarked on a journey of self-discovery and redefinition. "You are a rugby player, so to redefine yourself was massively important," he reflected. This period of soul-searching led him to establish the Get Busy Living Centre, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to supporting individuals with spinal injuries.

A Beacon of Hope

The Get Busy Living Centre, nestled in rural Leicestershire, offers comprehensive support, including physiotherapy, personal training, and wellbeing advice. Hampson's foundation has helped hundreds of individuals, some of whom have gone on to compete in the Paralympic Games. "The most worthwhile thing we can do in our life is to make an impression on someone else's life," Hampson said.

Changing Lives

Hampson's impact extends beyond the physical support provided at the centre. His story and the centre's work have transformed the way society views disability. "Now you can get busy living and you can do things," he said. "It's a challenge, every day is a challenge, but it makes it enjoyable and makes it worthwhile."

Legacy of Resilience

Matt Hampson's journey from a promising rugby player to a life-changing advocate for those with spinal injuries is a testament to his resilience and determination. His work continues to inspire and change lives, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can find purpose and make a profound impact.
