Formula 1 Explores Expansion: Bangkok Grand Prix in the Works

Formula 1 is in discussions to bring a street-circuit Grand Prix to Bangkok, with potential benefits for infrastructure, jobs, and technology.

Formula 1 Takes Steps Towards Bangkok Grand Prix

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali recently met with Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss the possibility of hosting a street-circuit Grand Prix in Bangkok by 2028. The government has pledged to conduct a feasibility study to explore the potential of this event. Thailand already boasts an FIA-certified track in Buriram, but a city race would mark a significant expansion of the sport’s presence in the region.

Economic and Technological Benefits

Paetongtarn highlighted the potential benefits of hosting a Formula 1 race, stating, "I believe that all Thai people will benefit from organizing this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, and importing new technologies and innovations." The event could serve as a catalyst for urban development and international tourism, positioning Bangkok as a global hub for motorsport.

Asia-Pacific’s Growing Role in Formula 1

The potential Bangkok Grand Prix would join four other races in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting Formula 1’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint in this dynamic market. Domenicali described the plans as "impressive," emphasizing the sport’s commitment to innovation and global growth. The addition of a Bangkok race would further solidify Formula 1’s presence in Asia, offering fans a unique urban racing experience.

Next Steps

While discussions are still in the early stages, the feasibility study will play a crucial role in determining the viability of the project. Should the plans come to fruition, Bangkok’s Grand Prix could become a cornerstone event in the Formula 1 calendar, attracting millions of viewers and bolstering Thailand’s international profile.
