Hamilton Secures Ferrari's First Sprint Pole at Chinese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton claimed his first sprint pole for Ferrari at the Chinese Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen in a thrilling qualifying session.

Lewis Hamilton made a stunning return to form by securing his first sprint pole position for Ferrari at the Chinese Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion outpaced Max Verstappen of Red Bull by a mere 0.018 seconds in a tightly contested qualifying session. McLaren's challenge waned at the Shanghai International Circuit, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris securing third and sixth places, respectively.

Sprint Qualifying Highlights

Hamilton's performance was a significant turnaround after a challenging start to the season. Ferrari’s setup improvements proved crucial, with the car showing remarkable pace compared to their struggles in Australia. Hamilton expressed his shock and delight, stating, "I didn’t expect this result, but I’m so happy and proud. The car came alive from lap one."

McLaren’s Struggles

Norris, who won the season-opener in Australia, faced difficulties in qualifying. A late braking error at the hairpin ruined his chances of securing pole. "I made a mistake, locked up in the last corner. We’ve been struggling with front locking and tail winds," Norris admitted. McLaren’s strategy of using a single set of tires for two flying laps didn’t pay off, leaving them off the pace.

Verstappen’s Satisfaction

Despite not clinching pole, Verstappen was pleased with his performance. "I’m very happy to be on the front row. The lap was very good, and this is a little motivation boost for everyone," he said. The Red Bull driver acknowledged the gap to Ferrari but remained optimistic about the sprint race.

Rookie Performances

Outside the top 10, Oliver Bearman of Haas impressed with a 12th-place finish, ahead of seasoned drivers like Fernando Alonso. Bearman, who struggled in Australia, felt more comfortable with the car in Shanghai. "From the first lap, I knew it would be a better weekend," he said.

Sprint Race Schedule

The sprint race is set to begin at 03:00 GMT on Saturday, followed by qualifying for the main race at 07:00 GMT. With Ferrari showing strong pace, Hamilton will be aiming to convert his pole into a victory, while Verstappen and McLaren look to challenge for the top spots.

Conclusion

Hamilton’s pole position marks a significant moment for Ferrari, signaling their resurgence in the 2024 season. As the teams prepare for the sprint race, all eyes will be on whether Hamilton can maintain his advantage and deliver a win for the Scuderia.
