Overcoming Adversity: Aoibheann Reilly's Rugby Resilience After Dual ACL Injuries

Ireland scrum-half Aoibheann Reilly discusses her comeback from two ACL injuries and her determination to succeed in international rugby.

Rising from the Ashes: A Rugby Comeback Story

Overcoming two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries within nine months would test any athlete's resolve. For Irish scrum-half Aoibheann Reilly, these setbacks have become stepping stones in her rugby journey as she prepares to start against Italy in the Women's Six Nations.

The Road to Recovery

The 24-year-old from Roscommon suffered her first ACL tear in autumn 2023, battling back to fitness only to sustain a second devastating injury during last summer's SVNS Grand Final in Madrid. This cruel twist dashed her Olympic dreams with Ireland Sevens.

"I had nine months of playing between both injuries. Mentally it was very tough but I knew if I got through it, this would make me stronger long-term," Reilly revealed.

International Return

After months of grueling rehabilitation, Reilly made her competitive return in March through the Celtic Challenge matches. Her emotional international comeback came last weekend with a 25-minute appearance against France in Belfast.

"Standing there for the anthem was a very emotional moment. After the Olympics disappointment, I focused everything on returning for that France game," she shared.

Looking Ahead to Italy Clash

With Ireland seeking their first win of the tournament after their 27-15 defeat to France, Reilly emphasizes the need for clinical execution:

  • Improving phase play consistency
  • Reducing forced plays under pressure
  • Capitalizing on scoring opportunities

"These away games are crucial preparation for the World Cup in England. We need to prove we can win on the road," Reilly asserted, reflecting on Sunday's match in Parma.

Building Resilience Through Adversity

While lamenting the lost Olympic opportunity, Reilly believes her ordeal has strengthened her both as a player and person:

"The support from teammates and family was incredible. These experiences build resilience that will serve me throughout my career."
