From Rugby to the NFL: Jordan Petaia's Dream Move to the Los Angeles Chargers

Former Wallabies star Jordan Petaia transitions from rugby to American football, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers through the NFL's International Player Pathway.

Jordan Petaia’s Transition from Rugby to the NFL

Former Australian rugby sensation Jordan Petaia has made a groundbreaking career shift, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program. The 25-year-old, who represented Australia in 31 Test matches and two Rugby World Cups (2019 and 2023), is now set to chase his dream on the American football field.

A Rugby Prodigy’s Journey

Petaia made history as Australia’s youngest Rugby World Cup player at just 19 years old, debuting against Uruguay in 2019. After a six-year stint with the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby, he retired from rugby in December 2023 to pursue his long-held ambition—playing in the NFL.

The NFL Opportunity

The International Player Pathway, launched in 2017, provides elite athletes from other sports the chance to secure a spot on an NFL roster. Petaia trained intensively for 10 weeks at Florida’s IMG Academy before earning his contract with the Chargers. He will now work under tight ends coach Andy Bischoff, joining the team’s tight end unit.

A Tribute to His Father

Petaia revealed that the NFL was a shared dream with his late father, who passed away in 2020. "He’d be looking down and shouting at me to take this opportunity," Petaia said in an emotional reflection. "I’d regret it if I didn’t."

What This Means for the Chargers

The Chargers gain a versatile athlete with exceptional agility and tackling prowess, traits that could translate well into special teams or tight end roles. His signing reflects the NFL’s growing global outreach, tapping into rugby’s physicality for crossover talent.

Key Stats:

  • Age: 25
  • Rugby Career: 31 Tests, 2 World Cups
  • Pathway: NFL IPP (2024)
  • Position: Tight End (Chargers)

Would Petaia’s rugby skills make him a standout in the NFL? Fans will be watching closely when the Chargers hit the field this season.
