Bristol Bears Women's Rugby have announced the departure of head coach Dave Ward, who has left the club after four transformative seasons. The 39-year-old former Harlequins forward informed players and staff this week as he prepares for a new chapter in his coaching career.

Ward's Coaching Legacy

During his tenure (2020-2024), Ward achieved:

  • Four consecutive Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) playoff appearances
  • 2024 PWR Final appearance (lost 36-24 to Gloucester-Hartpury)
  • Developed 22 international players through the Bears' system
  • Increased matchday attendance by 137% since taking charge

"This wasn't an easy decision," Ward said in his farewell statement. "The connection we've built with Bristol's rugby community these past four years transcends results. Seeing young girls holding up 'Future Bear' signs at our matches is what I'll cherish most."

Notable Achievements

Season PWR Finish Key Milestone
2020-21 Semi-final First playoff berth
2021-22 Semi-final Record points scored
2022-23 Semi-final Unbeaten home record
2023-24 Runner-up First PWR final

Tactical Innovations Ward revolutionized Bristol's playing style by:

  1. Implementing a "tri-plethora" back-row system
  2. Developing the league's most efficient lineout (92% success rate in 2024)
  3. Pioneering the use of GPS data for menstrual cycle management

The Road Ahead

The club has already begun their search for Ward's replacement, with internal candidates including:

  • Amber Reed (current attack coach)
  • Marlie Packer (player-coach, England international)
  • Danielle Waterman (performance consultant)

"Whoever comes next inherits a championship-ready squad," said Bears CEO Gavin Marshall. "Dave's built something extraordinary here that will continue growing."

Ward's final match was May's semi-final against Gloucester-Hartpury, where the eventual champions edged Bristol 28-26 in extra time. Players presented him with a signed match jersey post-game - now framed in the club's hall of fame.
