Zac Ward Draws on Champions Cup Experience to Elevate Ulster Performance

Ulster wing Zac Ward reflects on his Champions Cup journey as a key learning experience, embracing challenges to elevate his game alongside teammates like Jacob Stockdale.

Ulster wing Zac Ward believes his first Investec Champions Cup knockout appearance against Bordeaux-Begles—a 43-31 defeat—was a pivotal moment in his burgeoning XVs career. The 24-year-old, fresh from representing Ireland Sevens at the Paris Olympics, scored two tries in just his fifth senior start, calling it a "really good learning curve."

A Trial by Fire

Ward described the high-pressure match as both grueling and enlightening:

"I loved every second of it. It was a real test, but exactly the kind of challenge I need to grow. Competing against Europe's best is where I want to be."
Despite the loss, Ward’s performance highlighted his rapid adaptation to XVs rugby after transitioning from the sevens format.

Back-Three Synergy

Playing alongside Mike Lowry and Jacob Stockdale in the back-three proved invaluable:

"Mikey and Jacob have been massive for me. Our chemistry is translating to the pitch—those small adjustments in training are paying off."
He particularly praised Stockdale’s influence:
"Jacob, on his day, is world-class. Having his experience to lean on accelerates my development."

Looking Ahead

Ward emphasized Ulster’s depth in the back-three, noting how veteran insights shape his game:

"I’m constantly asking questions, not just from Jacob but all our senior players. That environment pushes me to improve."
With Ulster aiming to bounce back in the United Rugby Championship, Ward’s Champions Cup lessons could prove crucial.
