Jade Hall's Inspiring Comeback: From Illness to the London Marathon

Discover how Jade Hall overcame illness and motherhood to make a triumphant return to the London Marathon, showcasing resilience and passion for wheelchair racing.

Jade Hall's Journey: Overcoming Challenges to Return to the Track

Jade Hall, a two-time Paralympic wheelchair racer, has faced a rollercoaster of challenges over the past few years. From an enforced break due to illness to the arrival of her two children, Hall's journey has been anything but ordinary. Yet, with renewed enthusiasm, she is set to compete in the London Marathon just 13 months after giving birth to her daughter via Caesarean section.

Early Career and Achievements

Under her maiden name, Jones, Hall was mentored by Paralympic great Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and her husband Ian from the age of 12. She made her Great Britain debut at 15 and went on to compete at European and World Championships, as well as the London and Rio Paralympics. Hall later switched to Para-triathlon, winning Commonwealth gold for England in 2018 in Australia.

Health Challenges and Recovery

In mid-2020, Hall was diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the lining around the heart, which caused chest pain and discomfort. After recovering, she decided to take a break from elite sport and miss the Tokyo Paralympics. "There was definitely a point where I didn't think I was going to be able to race again," Hall shared with BBC Sport.

Family and Return to Racing

Hall and her husband, fellow wheelchair racer Callum, focused on starting a family. After welcoming their son Luca in February 2023, Hall returned to training and competed in the Manchester 10K race when Luca was just 12 weeks old. Shortly after, she discovered she was pregnant again, and their daughter Bonnie arrived in March 2024.

A New Chapter

"I've had a period of almost three years of being in and out of training and with the Caesarean, it's like I've started from scratch," Hall explained. Despite the challenges, she feels a renewed passion for the sport. "Having that forced break with the illness and then having the children made me realise that I do really love it," she said.

Looking Ahead

Hall finished seventh in the New York Marathon in November, seven months after Bonnie's birth. This Sunday, she returns to London, where she last raced in 2018. While the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics are on her radar, Hall is focused on her short-term goals. "LA is at the back of my mind but I want to see how the next year goes and how I can earn my place back on the marathon circuit," she said.

A Family Affair

Hall's family plays a crucial role in her sporting life. "I'm enjoying it - probably more than I ever have - and I want my children to be able to see me doing something positive with my life," she shared. Her journey is not just about personal achievement but also about inspiring her children and others who face similar challenges.

Conclusion

Jade Hall's story is one of resilience, determination, and passion. As she prepares to take on the London Marathon, she continues to inspire with her unwavering spirit and dedication to her sport.
