FIFA Imposes Signing Ban on Greenock Morton Due to Administrative Error

Greenock Morton faces a FIFA-imposed signing ban due to an administrative error, potentially affecting their summer transfer plans.

Greenock Morton, a prominent club in the Scottish Championship, has been banned from signing new players or extending current contracts by FIFA. This decision, enforced on March 17, stems from what the club describes as an 'administration error'. Despite the setback, Morton is optimistic about resolving the issue by mid-May, ensuring it doesn't disrupt their summer transfer window plans.

The Impact on Morton's Squad

Morton's first-team squad currently consists of 20 players, with 10 set to be out of contract by the season's end. Additionally, two loan players are expected to return to their parent clubs. This situation places additional pressure on the club to resolve the FIFA ban promptly.

Efforts to Resolve the Issue

In a recent statement, Morton revealed they are working closely with FIFA to address the administrative error that led to the temporary registration ban. The club had earlier requested access from FIFA to submit necessary compliance information but did not receive the required access in time, resulting in the ban.

Looking Ahead

Morton has been assured by FIFA that the issue will be resolved by mid-May, following the submission of required documentation. Importantly, the ban does not affect the club's ability to renew contracts of existing players whose contracts expire this summer. Furthermore, new player registrations are typically processed in June, aligning with the opening of the next transfer window.
