Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has recently shared his personal experiences with mental health, highlighting the importance of seeking help and breaking the stigma associated with mental health struggles in professional sports.
Burn, who made his Premier League debut with Fulham in 2014, revealed that he went through a challenging period early in his career. Speaking to former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer during Mental Health Awareness Week, Burn reflected on his younger years when he found it difficult to discuss his mental health issues.
"I think I was embarrassed," Burn admitted. "At the time, I was playing Premier League football at just 21 years old, and I couldn't understand why I was feeling this way. But mental health doesn't discriminate—it can affect anyone, regardless of their success or age."
Burn emphasized that opening up about his struggles was a turning point for him. "You think you're the only person going through it, but when you start talking, you realize that everyone has their own battles. I was fortunate to have a strong support network around me."
He also noted that awareness of mental health has significantly improved in recent years, especially within the football community. "When I started my career, mental health was a taboo subject, and seeking help was often seen as a weakness. But I believe it's the opposite—it takes immense strength to admit you're struggling and ask for support."
In a significant move to promote mental health awareness, all Premier League matches held on May 10-11 were dedicated to the "Inside Matters" campaign. This initiative aims to encourage fans to check in on the wellbeing of others and foster a more supportive environment within the football community.
Burn's candid discussion serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is a crucial aspect of overall wellbeing, and seeking help is a courageous step towards a healthier, more balanced life.
