Alastair Chalmers Aims for World Championship Glory After Record-Breaking Performance

Alastair Chalmers sets a new personal best in the 400m hurdles, eyeing a spot in the World Championships final in Tokyo.

Alastair Chalmers, the reigning British champion in the 400m hurdles, has set his sights on the World Championships final in Tokyo after achieving a new personal best. The 25-year-old athlete from Guernsey clocked an impressive 48.30 seconds in Germany, surpassing his previous record by 0.24 seconds. This remarkable time places him as the fifth-fastest Briton in the history of the 400m hurdles.

Chalmers' journey to the top has been marked by consistent improvement. Last summer, he narrowly missed the finals at the European Championships and fell in the semi-finals at the Olympic Games in Paris. However, his recent performance has reignited his ambitions.

"So much can happen between now and then, I've just got to stay healthy," Chalmers shared with BBC Radio Guernsey. "I think on the day in Tokyo if I can execute a really good race and I'm healthy and in good shape then there is a good chance I could make that final."

Chalmers has dominated the British championships, winning the last five titles. His dedication and hard work have paid off, as he continues to improve his best time year on year. "Running the fastest time of your life is always a lovely feeling," he added. "When I crossed the line I was just very happy that I'd run that world qualifier, personal best, I think it was a meet record as well."

With the World Championships in Japan scheduled from 13-21 September, Chalmers is in an excellent position both physically and mentally. "I'm just in a great place physically and mentally and it just allows me to go out and run quick on the track against some really high quality athletes," he said.

Chalmers' focus now is on the upcoming British Championships, where a top-two finish would secure his place in Tokyo. His determination and recent form suggest that he is a strong contender for a spot in the World Championships final.
