Paul Hughes vs. Usman Nurmagomedov Rematch: PFL's Strategic Shift and Fan Expectations
The potential rematch between Paul Hughes and Usman Nurmagomedov heats up as PFL adjusts its fight plans, focusing on fan-driven matchups and strategic bouts.

In a surprising twist, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has hinted at a possible rematch between Paul Hughes and Usman Nurmagomedov, despite earlier announcements suggesting a different path for Nurmagomedov. PFL spokesperson Jonathan Coachman clarified that the organization is reconsidering its fight scheduling to better align with fan expectations and fighter readiness.
The Controversial Announcement
Initially, the PFL's X account declared that the winner of the Mansour Barnaoui vs. Archie Colgan bout on June 20 would face Nurmagomedov. However, Coachman later stated that this post did not reflect the PFL's official plans, citing "issues" with their social media communication.
Hughes' Reaction
Paul Hughes, a rising star from Derry, expressed frustration over the initial announcement, labeling it as "rage bait." He shared private messages with Nurmagomedov, where the Russian fighter indicated he needed another win before agreeing to a rematch. Hughes, who lost narrowly to Nurmagomedov in January, made a strong comeback in May with a 42-second knockout of Bruno Miranda in Belfast.
Strategic Considerations
Coachman emphasized the PFL's commitment to creating the right fights at the right time. "We’re not here to drag stuff out," he said. "We’re going to listen to the fans and make sure we bring in the right fighters at the right price."
The Lightweight Title
Nurmagomedov, previously the Bellator lightweight champion, is now recognized by the PFL as their lightweight world champion. His next bout is expected to be a title defense, adding further intrigue to the potential rematch with Hughes.
