Scottish Rugby Strives for Contract Clarity Ahead of 2025 World Cup

Scottish Rugby aims to resolve contract issues for the national women's team before the 2025 World Cup, ensuring clarity and support for players.

Scottish Rugby is addressing the 'uncomfortable' situation surrounding contracts for the national women's team, with the goal of resolving these issues before the 2025 World Cup. Chief executive Alex Williamson emphasized that the organization is committed to providing clarity and support for the players.

Current Contract Situation

Currently, only 15 out of the 38-player training squad for the World Cup are on year-long contracts. This leaves the remaining players on short-term deals, who may face uncertainty about their employment post-tournament. A representative of the squad highlighted that some players are struggling with their mental and emotional health due to this uncertainty.

Commitment to Players

Williamson assured that the players will know their exact situation before they compete in the World Cup. 'We have given them certainty for the near term, through the World Cup,' he said. 'We are very close to providing them with all the outcomes they are looking for.'

Professionalizing Women's Rugby

Negotiations for short-term security are part of a broader effort to professionalize women's rugby in Scotland. Williamson explained that the goal is to create a sustainable environment for professional rugby in Scotland, rather than relying on players to compete in England.

Enhancing the Celtic Challenge

Scottish Rugby is also looking to enhance the Celtic Challenge, aiming to make it competitive enough to justify a British and Irish league. 'If the Celtic Challenge is weak, there is no common sense conversation to be had with the Premiership Women's Rugby,' Williamson noted.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the long-term plan is beneficial, it presents immediate challenges for the players. 'We are creating some quite challenging moments for our players,' Williamson admitted. 'They don't necessarily want it to happen directly to them in this moment.'

Conclusion

Scottish Rugby is navigating a delicate balance between supporting current players and building a professional future for women's rugby in Scotland. The organization remains committed to resolving contract issues and providing clarity ahead of the 2025 World Cup.
