Ben Earl: The Unyielding Spirit of the British and Irish Lions

Ben Earl discusses the relentless drive required to earn a Test spot with the British and Irish Lions, emphasizing teamwork and self-belief.

England back row Ben Earl has been a standout performer on the British and Irish Lions' tour, delivering a stellar performance in their 21-10 victory over New South Wales Waratahs. The 27-year-old Saracens star made 21 carries and covered 114 metres, the highest of any player in the match.

Earl spoke candidly about the intensity of competing for a Test spot, stating, 'How can you be complacent when you're playing for the Lions? You get complacent, you let down the badge, you let down the honour.' His words reflect the ethos of the Lions, where every player is driven by pride and a commitment to the team.

The competition in the back row is fierce, with players like Wales' Jac Morgan, Ireland's Josh van der Flier, and Jack Conan all vying for a place. Morgan, in particular, has been in scintillating form, earning the Player of the Match award against Queensland Reds. Meanwhile, Henry Pollock has also impressed with his dynamic breaks against Western Force.

Earl emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself while contributing to the team. 'I never want to copy the way Jac Morgan plays the game because I wouldn't be true to myself,' he said. 'It is about finding a balance to what you're trying to do, but also, I'm just trying to be a good team-mate as that is what the Lions is about.'

As the Lions prepare for their first Test against Australia on 19 July, Earl remains focused on his role, regardless of the outcome. 'If it doesn't go my way in Brisbane, come two weeks today, so be it,' he added. 'I have not come in with an expectation of saying 'I want to play in this Test'.'

This tour has showcased the depth of talent within the Lions squad, with each player bringing their unique strengths to the table. Earl's humility and determination embody the spirit of the Lions, making him a key figure in their quest for success.
