FAI Faces Scrutiny Over Historical Abuse Claims: Key Hearing Postponed
The Football Association of Ireland prepares for a deferred hearing on historical abuse claims, ensuring thorough preparation amidst ongoing investigations.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has agreed to attend a crucial meeting with the Joint Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture, and Sport to address allegations that it was aware of historical abuse claims before they became public. However, the FAI has requested a four-week deferral to adequately prepare for the hearing.
In 2024, former female footballers came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and coercion by two named coaches during the 1990s. These claims surfaced following a joint investigation by the Sunday Independent and RTÉ. Both accused coaches have denied the allegations, and the An Garda Síochána (Irish police) are currently investigating the matter.
The FAI has publicly apologized to the affected women but has faced repeated calls to clarify its prior knowledge of these allegations before the investigation's findings were released. The association stated that the deferral is necessary to ensure adequate preparation time, especially given the complexity introduced by the Committee's request for materials related to an ongoing Garda investigation.
In their official statement, the FAI highlighted that key personnel are on annual leave on the proposed meeting dates of 9 July and 16 July, further necessitating the postponement. The association emphasized the need to carefully assess any disclosure for legal and GDPR compliance, given the sensitive and confidential nature of the safeguarding information requested.
During the intervening period, the FAI has committed to liaising with the Committee to clearly define the scope of the session, ensuring that no parties inadvertently compromise the ongoing investigation. The FAI reiterated its respect for the important work of the Joint Committee and its commitment to engaging constructively on this matter.
The FAI also encouraged anyone involved in Republic of Ireland football who has experienced abuse to report it to the association, underscoring its dedication to safeguarding and transparency.
