Ella Toone's Family and Local Pub: A Legacy of Support and Community
Discover how Ella Toone's family and the Union Arms pub in Tyldesley have supported her football journey, from childhood to the Women's Euro final.

In the heart of Tyldesley, Greater Manchester, the Union Arms pub stands as a testament to community spirit and unwavering support for local hero Ella Toone. As the Lionesses prepare for the Women's Euro final against Spain, the pub buzzes with anticipation, echoing decades of tradition and familial pride.
A Legacy of Support
The Union Arms has been a second home to the Toone family for over four decades. It’s where Ella, now a Manchester United midfielder, used to unwind with her late father after football training. "We have all the family come in, her friends all come in, they always sit in the same place and everybody just gets involved," says licensee Sharon Mattin. The pub’s walls, adorned with a mural of Toone celebrating the 2022 Euro victory, tell the story of a community that rallies behind its star.
Emotional Journeys
For Toone’s aunt, Tracy Haslam, this tournament is particularly poignant. It marks the first international competition since the passing of Toone’s father, Nick, who was a constant presence in her football journey. "He went to all the away games, he went to the World Cup. He used to be right by her side all the time when it came to football," Ms. Haslam recalls. The family’s bond remains strong, with Toone staying true to her roots despite her rising fame.
Community Hub
The Union Arms has become a pilgrimage site for football fans across England. Custom Ella Toone bucket hats are distributed, and the mural outside draws visitors from far and wide. "When they won the Euros we said let's have this done, this moment needs something," Ms. Mattin explains. The pub’s role in fostering community spirit and celebrating local talent is unparalleled.
Staying Grounded
Despite her success, Toone remains the same kind-hearted individual her family has always known. "She's just Ella to us," Ms. Haslam affirms. From her early days at Astley & Tyldesley to her senior debut with Manchester City and her call-up to the England squad, Toone’s journey is a testament to hard work, family support, and community love.
As the Lionesses gear up for the final, the Union Arms will once again be filled with cheers, tears, and unwavering support for Ella Toone, a true local hero.
