Ireland's Rugby World Cup Journey: Players Rise to the Challenge Under Bemand's Leadership

Ireland's head coach Scott Bemand discusses the selection process for the Women's Rugby World Cup, highlighting the team's resilience and depth as they prepare for the tournament.

Ireland's Preparation for the Rugby World Cup

As the Women's Rugby World Cup approaches, Ireland's head coach Scott Bemand has expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance in the lead-up to the tournament. Despite a recent loss to Canada in their final warm-up match, Bemand remains optimistic about the squad's potential.

Team Dynamics and Player Selection

Bemand emphasized the competitive nature of the selection process, stating, "There's a lot of girls that put their hands up, which is really pleasing." He highlighted the importance of pressure in elite sports and how the team has adapted to it over the past two years.

Overcoming Challenges

Ireland has faced setbacks with injuries to key players like Erin King and Dorothy Wall. However, Bemand is confident in the depth of his squad, noting, "As that second half showed, we've got more than just a 15 - we've got a squad and people that can come on and make differences to a game."

Looking Ahead

Ireland will open their World Cup campaign against Japan on August 24 in Northampton. They will also face Spain and reigning champions New Zealand in Pool C. Bemand refuted claims that the team is underprepared, stating, "I don't think we're undercooked. I think we're right."

Strategic Approach

Drawing from his experience in previous World Cups, Bemand plans to strategically build the team's performance throughout the tournament. "We're not peaking yet, but we certainly will be peaking as we go through the World Cup," he said.
