Coleman Wong Makes History at US Open 2025: A New Era for Hong Kong Tennis

Coleman Wong becomes the first male player from Hong Kong to win a Grand Slam singles match at the US Open 2025, marking a historic moment in tennis.

Coleman Wong's Historic Win

Coleman Wong, a 21-year-old qualifier from Hong Kong, has made history by becoming the first male player from his country to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open era. Wong's victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-5, 7-5, 7-6) at the US Open 2025 has not only secured his place in tennis history but also brought immense pride to Hong Kong.

Journey to the US Open

Wong, who started playing tennis at the age of five, moved to Rafael Nadal's academy in Mallorca, Spain, when he was 17. This move proved pivotal in his development as a player. "I'm still soaking it in because it's a big moment for me and also my family, and Hong Kong people back home. It means a lot," Wong shared after his match.

A Message from Nadal

Shortly after his victory, Wong received a congratulatory message from tennis legend Rafael Nadal. "It was surreal to receive a message from Rafa. He's been an inspiration to me throughout my career," Wong said.

Meeting Fellow History Maker

In Spain, Wong met Alexandra Eala, who also made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles match. "Alex helped me a lot to get used to the environment because she was there for a long time," Wong mentioned. "From being a little kid from Hong Kong all the way to Spain, it's tough."

The Open Era

The Open era, which began in 1968, allows professional players to compete alongside amateurs in Grand Slam tournaments. Wong's victory is a testament to the opportunities this era has provided to players from all over the world.

Next Challenge

Wong will face Australia's Adam Walton in the next round. With his historic win, Wong has set the stage for what could be a remarkable journey in the US Open 2025.
