Birmingham Panthers: A New Era for Netball in the Midlands
The Birmingham Panthers are on a mission to elevate netball across the Midlands with community engagement and lofty ambitions.
The newly established Birmingham Panthers netball team is set to make waves in the Midlands as they prepare to engage local communities and inspire the next generation of players. Unlike the previous local team, the Severn Stars, who were rooted in Worcester, the Panthers are taking to the court in major cities, with home games slated for Birmingham, Coventry, and Worcester.
Former Australian goal defense, Gabby Coffey, emphasizes their commitment to nurturing the sport. "We have the chance to connect with the community and ensure the sport thrives for the next two decades," says Ms. Coffey. To resonate with fans, the Panthers unveiled their mascot, Peaky the Panther, during a special event at the Devonshire Junior Academy in Smethwick, aimed at motivating young athletesa.
The Panthers kicked off their journey with a thrilling pre-season match, securing a victory over Nottingham Forest last week, which demonstrates their readiness and ambition. Team member Aliyah Zaranyika declares their collective goal: "Our target is to secure a top-four finish. Winning is our priority, but personal growth and teamwork are essential. We push each other to excel and improve as individuals."
The Birmingham Panthers are geared up to face new challenges as they take the court for their first competitive game on March 8. With a strong foundation and community-driven focus, the Panthers are poised to be a formidable force in the Netball Super League.
