Boxing Community Mourns the Loss of John Cooney

In a heart-wrenching event that has left the boxing world in mourning, John Cooney, the 28-year-old Irish super-featherweight champion, has died following complications from an intracranial haemorrhage suffered during his title fight against Nathan Howells. The bout, which took place at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on Saturday night, was stopped in the ninth round after Cooney showed signs of distress. He was immediately attended to by the medical team before being rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain.

Cooney, who had successfully defended his Celtic super-featherweight title against Liam Gaynor in November 2023, was known for his resilience and determination in the ring. His promoter, MHD Promotions, shared a heartfelt statement on behalf of his family: 'It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away. He was a much-loved son, brother, and partner, and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was.'

Cooney's career was marked by several significant victories, including a comeback win over Tanzania's Tampela Maharusi in October 2024, following a year-long hiatus due to a hand injury. The boxing community has expressed its grief and condolences, with Conrad Cummings, a former double WBO European champion, paying tribute on social media: 'John Cooney the warrior gave up his fight & passed away this evening. I am deeply saddened, I can't begin to think of the hurt his poor fiancee & family are going through. I pray they find the strength.'

This tragedy underscores the inherent risks associated with professional boxing and has prompted a renewed discussion about fighter safety and medical protocols in the sport.
