Oliver Bearman's Journey to F1: From a Failed Driving Test to Racing Glory

Haas F1 driver Oliver Bearman shares his journey from failing a driving test to becoming a promising rookie in Formula 1.

Oliver Bearman's Unconventional Path to F1

Oliver Bearman, the 19-year-old Haas driver, recently opened up about his surprising journey to Formula 1, including his initial failure in a driving test back in 2022. Bearman, who is now a full-time F1 driver, explained the incident during a press conference ahead of F1's 75th anniversary launch event.

The Failed Driving Test

Bearman revealed that he failed his driving test on his first attempt, primarily due to a missed stop sign.

"I missed a stop sign," Bearman admitted. "I didn't blow it. I slowed down; I was crawling, but you're meant to stop. We don't have those [stop signs] on race tracks. Typical me, typical racing driver, I thought I could pass my test without having lessons, so that's probably where I went wrong. After that, I took a few lessons."

Rising Through the Ranks

Bearman's relentless determination saw him rise rapidly through the motorsport ranks. He made his debut as Ferrari's youngest ever rookie at the age of 18 years and 305 days, standing in for Carlos Sainz at the Saudi Grand Prix, where he impressively finished seventh. He also filled in twice for Haas, securing 10th in Baku and 12th in Sao Paulo.

Looking Ahead

As Bearman embarks on his first full season in F1, he joins a lineup of young talents, including 18-year-old Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. With preseason testing in Bahrain from February 26-28 and the Australian Grand Prix kicking off the season on March 14-16, Bearman is poised to make a significant impact in the 2025 F1 season.

Bearman's journey from a failed driving test to the pinnacle of motorsport is a testament to his resilience and passion for racing. His story is an inspiration to aspiring drivers worldwide.
