Millwall Condemns Heinous Abuse Towards Liam Roberts Post-Mateta Incident in FA Cup Clash

Millwall firmly denounces the vile abuse targeted at Liam Roberts following a contentious tackle in the FA Cup match against Crystal Palace.

Millwall Goalkeeper Liam Roberts

Millwall FC has issued a strong condemnation in the wake of relentless abuse directed at their goalkeeper, Liam Roberts. The uproar ensued after a controversial incident during the FA Cup fifth round where Roberts was shown a red card for a high tackle on Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The match, held at Selhurst Park this past Saturday, saw an unfortunate collision just eight minutes into the game. Mateta suffered a severe laceration to his left ear, requiring 25 stitches. He was subsequently stretchered off, receiving eight minutes of on-field treatment before being taken to the hospital for further care.

Millwall, in an official statement released on Monday, expressed their dismay at the unwarranted criticism and online abuse faced by Roberts. They noted that certain reports and comments from high-profile figures suggested malicious intent behind Roberts' tackle, which the club vehemently denies.

Club Statement Highlights:

  • "The club are disgusted by abuse directed towards goalkeeper Liam Roberts following Saturday's unfortunate collision with Jean-Philippe Mateta."
  • "The reporting on the matter, as well as disgraceful suggestions made by certain news organisations and high-profile figures within the sport that Liam intended to harm Jean-Philippe, has contributed to the unwarranted character assassination of Liam and fuelled abhorrent online abuse towards him."

Roberts, aged 30, reportedly reached out to Mateta on the evening of the incident, extending an apology which Mateta accepted immediately. Millwall's manager, Alex Neil, also spoke out in defense of Roberts.

Manager Alex Neil’s Statement: "I am not accepting anybody suggesting Liam has tried to hurt the player. We're five minutes into the game, we're trying to win the game. I hope the lad is fine, I hope he comes back if it's a serious injury, we wish him the best. For anyone to suggest Liam would intentionally hurt him is way off the mark for me."

The Football Association is considering whether to extend Roberts' three-game suspension for serious foul play.

Millwall FC remains steadfast in their support for Roberts, emphasizing that their players do not step onto the field with any intent to harm. They also wished Mateta a speedy recovery.

Further Club Statement: "No player at Millwall Football Club steps on to the pitch with the intent to harm another, and the club will continue to support Liam, who reached out to Jean-Philippe personally on Saturday evening with an apology which was accepted immediately. The club are pleased to hear positive updates from Jean-Philippe and wish him the best in his recovery."

While the incident has certainly sparked debate and controversy, Millwall and their supporters remain united in defending their players against unwarranted attacks and abuse.
