Amateur Tyler Weaver's Surreal Journey: Practising with Brooks Koepka at the US Open

Amateur golfer Tyler Weaver shares his surreal experience practising with Brooks Koepka ahead of his US Open debut at Oakmont.

Tyler Weaver, a 20-year-old amateur golfer from Suffolk, recently had the opportunity of a lifetime when he practised with two-time US Open champion Brooks Koepka at Oakmont. This surreal experience marked a significant milestone in Weaver's budding career as he prepares to make his major debut at the US Open.

A Family Affair

Weaver's journey to the US Open is a testament to his family's sporting legacy. His father, Jason Weaver, is a former leading flat racing jockey, and his grandfather, Eric, played professional football for Swindon Town. With such a rich sporting background, Tyler has quickly made a name for himself in the golfing world, currently shining at Florida State University.

The Road to Oakmont

Weaver's path to the US Open was paved with determination and skill. He finished joint third in a 36-hole US Open qualifier in Atlanta, earning him a spot to compete alongside the world's best golfers in Pennsylvania. "Playing a major has always been a dream of mine," Tyler shared. "To be here, it's a little bit surreal. But I'm going to go out and compete and do as good as I can."

Learning from the Best

Practising with Brooks Koepka was a highlight for Weaver. Koepka, a US Open winner in 2017 and 2018, offered valuable insights into the championship. "He just said a really big thing at US Opens is keeping doubles off the card," Tyler recalled. "He said, it takes only one hole to make up from a bogey. But a double bogey is two birdies. And birdies out here are really tough, so that's a big thing."

Family Support

Weaver's family has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. His brother, Max, will be his caddie at Oakmont, and his parents will be there to cheer him on. "It's fiercely competitive in the family," said Jason Weaver. "They both picked up a club early. They saw me going out, chopping it around, and they're much better than I could ever dream of being."

Ambitions and Gratitude

Weaver is not just here to make up the numbers. He has his sights set on making the cut and getting into contention. However, he is also deeply grateful for the support he has received from his community and the Links Club in Newmarket, where members raised money to buy equipment for him. "It means a lot to me," Tyler said. "I just want to thank all those people back at home that have helped me since I was a young kid."

As Tyler Weaver steps onto the course at Oakmont, he carries with him the hopes and dreams of his family, his community, and himself. This week is not just about golf; it's about a young man's journey to greatness.
