Southampton's Solak Reflects on VAR Impact and Club's Future Amid Managerial Changes

Southampton owner Dragan Solak discusses the impact of VAR on the team's performance, managerial changes, and his vision for the club's future.

During Dragan Solak's tenure as Southampton owner, the club has experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows, including two relegations, one promotion, and five different permanent managers. In a candid interview with BBC Sport, Solak shared his thoughts on the challenges faced and his unwavering commitment to the club.

VAR's Role in Managerial Changes

Solak pointed out that the video assistant referee (VAR) played a significant role in the team's struggles last season. He believes that VAR decisions cost the team eight points, which ultimately led to the sacking of former manager Russell Martin. "If he had those eight points more in December, I think he would probably manage the team through the whole season," Solak remarked. Martin, who led Southampton to promotion, was unable to replicate that success in the Premier League, winning just one game before his departure.

Commitment to Southampton

Despite the setbacks, Solak remains committed to Southampton and has no plans to sell the club. "I have never had any plans of selling the club," he stated. He emphasized his long-term vision for the club, focusing on commercial and financial development to make Southampton more robust and less dependent on TV rights deals. Solak also hinted at the possibility of inviting new investors once the club returns to the Premier League.

New Managerial Appointment

In May, Southampton appointed Will Still as their new head coach. Still, who previously managed Ligue 1 club Reims, is seen as a promising young talent in the coaching world. Solak expressed his confidence in Still, describing him as "a very smart guy" who is eager to prove himself in English football.

Challenges Ahead

Southampton's recent relegation from the Premier League highlighted the growing gap between the top tier and the Championship. Solak acknowledged the need for financial redistribution to make the competition more meaningful. "The gap has to be narrowed somehow or it will create problems for both the Championship and for the Premier League in the future," he said.

As Southampton prepares for the upcoming season, Solak remains optimistic about the club's future. With a new manager at the helm and a clear vision for growth, Southampton aims to bounce back stronger and reclaim their place in the Premier League.
