Real Madrid Stands Firm: Rejects La Liga Match in the USA

Real Madrid strongly opposes the proposal to move a La Liga match to the USA, citing concerns over competitive integrity and setting a dangerous precedent.

Real Madrid has strongly rejected the proposal to move a La Liga match between Villarreal and Barcelona to the United States, labeling it as setting an unacceptable precedent in football. The match, originally scheduled for December 21 at Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica, has been proposed to be relocated to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, a venue set to host matches during the 2026 World Cup.

In a strongly worded statement, Real Madrid expressed their concerns, stating that such a move would have serious consequences for the sport. "If this proposal is carried out, its consequences would be so serious that they would mean a before and after for the world of football," the club said.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has approved the proposal, but it still requires permission from FIFA and UEFA. However, Real Madrid has urged both governing bodies to not authorize the match without the prior consent of all La Liga clubs.

Fan Opposition and Legal Threats

The Spanish football supporters' association (FASFE) has joined forces with fan groups from Barcelona and Villarreal to firmly oppose the move. They have warned that they would take legal action if the proposal goes ahead.

Villarreal's Perspective

On the other hand, Villarreal president Fernando Roig sees the US opportunity as something they must seize. "We have to expand the brand of our football and of Villarreal CF," he said. "Many clubs agree on the need to internationalise and to look for ways to generate more revenue so we can get closer to other leagues, such as the Premier League."

FIFA's Stance

Currently, FIFA's rules do not allow domestic league matches to be played abroad. However, last year, FIFA set up a working group to explore the matter, indicating a potential shift in policy.

Historical Context

This is not the first time La Liga has considered moving matches abroad. Last year, there was a proposal to hold Barcelona's match against Atletico Madrid in Miami, but it was dropped due to time constraints.

Real Madrid's Concerns

Real Madrid, who have won a record 36 La Liga titles, argue that moving Villarreal's home fixture away from their stadium would alter the competitive balance and grant an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs. "The integrity of the competition requires that all matches be held under the same conditions for all teams," Real Madrid added in their statement.

Other International Matches

Other one-off matches, such as the Italian Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup, have been held abroad in recent years. However, the proposal to move a regular league match abroad is seen as a significant escalation.

Conclusion

Real Madrid's strong stance highlights the complexities and potential risks of internationalizing domestic league matches. The outcome of this proposal could set a precedent for the future of football, making it a critical issue for the sport's governing bodies and stakeholders.
