Brothers in Arms: Sessegnon Twins Set for Historic FA Cup Clash

Steven and Ryan Sessegnon, twin brothers and former Fulham teammates, prepare for a historic face-off in the FA Cup as Wigan Athletic host Fulham.

A Historic Encounter

This Saturday, the football world will witness a rare and emotional moment as twin brothers Steven and Ryan Sessegnon face each other on opposite sides in the FA Cup. Wigan Athletic, currently in League One, will host Premier League side Fulham in the fourth round of the competition. This match marks the first time the brothers will compete against each other in a competitive fixture.

The Sessegnon Journey

Born on May 18, 2000, in Roehampton, the Sessegnon twins have been inseparable in their football journey. They joined Fulham's academy at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, making their senior debuts before turning 18. Ryan, a winger, moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 for £25 million but returned to Fulham last July. Steven, a left-back, joined Wigan Athletic in August 2023 after making 19 appearances for Fulham.

Family Ties and Nerves

Steven, the older twin by 25 minutes, admits it will be a "once-in-a-lifetime" moment to face his brother. "It's going to be very strange," he told BBC Sport. "Ryan is my twin, and the game is against my former club. It's going to be exciting for all the family." However, their parents, Bridgette and Desire, will not be attending the match. "My mum and dad get nervous just watching one of us play," Steven explained. "I don't think they will be able to handle both of us on the same pitch at the same time."

The Road to Wembley

Both brothers have had impressive careers so far. Ryan has played in the Champions League with Tottenham, while Steven helped England win the Under-17 World Cup in 2017. Despite their separate paths, the twins remain close, often speaking on the phone. "We know one another inside out," Steven said. "We speak a lot on the phone. He's got a one-year-old daughter, and I love being on the phone with her and him."

The Manager's Perspective

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney, who won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013, is focused on the game. "I want to win," he said. "I know this game means a lot for those two [Steven and Ryan]. Sess is a brilliant guy who has worked extremely hard to get fit for this game. I'm pretty sure if we're winning, I'll need Sess at some point, so I hope he is on the pitch."

A Match to Remember

This FA Cup clash is more than just a game; it's a celebration of family, talent, and the beautiful game. Whether on the same side or opposing teams, the Sessegnon twins continue to inspire with their dedication and love for football.
