Bangladesh Cricket Spinner Faces Five-Year Ban Over Match-Fixing Scandal

Bangladesh's Shohely Akhter banned for five years after attempting to corrupt a 2023 Women's T20 World Cup match with a £13,000 bribe.

Match-Fixing Scandal Rocks Women's Cricket

Bangladesh spinner Shohely Akhter has been handed a five-year ban from all forms of cricket after attempting to fix a match during the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Akhter offered a fellow player £13,000 ($16,465) to intentionally get dismissed hit-wicket during Bangladesh's match against Australia on 14 February 2023.

The Breach of ICC's Anti-Corruption Code

Akhter, 36, admitted to five breaches of the ICC's anti-corruption code. The incident occurred despite her not being part of the tournament squad. According to the ICC, Akhter approached an unnamed teammate through a series of voice notes on Facebook, urging the player to hit their own stumps during the match. The targeted player, however, reported the approach to the ICC's anti-corruption unit, leading to the investigation.

ICC's Response and Ban Details

The ICC stated that Akhter's admission of guilt eliminated the need for a formal disciplinary hearing. The governing body deemed the five-year ineligibility as reasonable and proportionate given the severity of the offense. Akhter, who last played for Bangladesh in 2022, is now banned from participating in any form of cricket, including playing, coaching, or officiating in matches sanctioned by the ICC or any national cricket association.

Impact on Women's Cricket

This incident raises concerns about integrity in women's cricket, especially in high-profile tournaments like the T20 World Cup. The ICC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the sport's credibility and ensuring such breaches are met with strict penalties.
