Tragic Loss: Former Croatia Midfielder Nikola Pokrivac Dies in Car Accident

Former Croatia international Nikola Pokrivac tragically died in a car accident. A respected midfielder, he battled Hodgkin's lymphoma and returned to amateur football.

Former Croatia international Nikola Pokrivac has tragically passed away following a car accident in his homeland. The Croatian Football Federation confirmed the devastating news, sending shockwaves through the football community.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Pokrivac, aged 39, was a talented midfielder who represented top clubs such as Dinamo Zagreb, AS Monaco, and RB Salzburg. He earned 15 international caps between 2008 and 2010, showcasing his skill on the global stage. His career highlights include playing in Euro 2008, where Croatia reached the quarter-finals, and facing England twice during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Battling Adversity

In 2015, Pokrivac was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a battle that forced him to retire from professional football. However, his passion for the game remained undiminished. In 2021, he made a remarkable return to amateur football, joining lower league side NK Vojnic last summer.

The Tragic Accident

According to local media, Pokrivac was traveling with three teammates from NK Vojnic when their vehicle was involved in a four-car collision in Karlovac, central Croatia, on Friday evening. Tragically, a 42-year-old individual in another car also lost their life. The other occupants of Pokrivac's car sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

Tributes Pour In

Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustic paid heartfelt tribute to Pokrivac, stating, "Nikola was a great football player, who lived football until his last moment in this world, and who showed great courage in life by overcoming a terrible disease." He added, "This is a great loss for our football community, and especially painful for the family."

Kustic further expressed his condolences, saying, "It is impossible to find words of comfort in such a shocking and unimaginably sad moment when we have lost a young life. I can only express my deepest condolences to Nikola's family and loved ones for this irreparable loss, and the HNS [the national football association] and the Croatian football family will be with them in these most difficult moments."

A Legacy Remembered

Nikola Pokrivac's journey is one of resilience, passion, and determination. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers in Croatia and beyond. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire football community during this difficult time.
