A Historic Moment for Darts: Huw Ware Shatters Barriers as First Openly Gay Referee

Huw Ware's officiating at the PDC World Darts Championship final marks a significant milestone for inclusivity in sport.

A Pioneering Step for Inclusivity in Darts

In an unprecedented moment for the sport, Huw Ware has made history by becoming the first openly gay referee to officiate a PDC World Darts Championship final. This landmark event took place when he oversaw Luke Littler's spectacular victory over Michael Van Gerwen, solidifying Littler's place as the youngest ever winner of the championship.

Huw, hailing from Cardiff, expressed immense pride while reflecting on his journey over the last eight years with the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Despite facing numerous challenges earlier in his career, he has emerged as a powerful symbol of resilience and hope for the LGBTQ+ community in sports. He shared, "It has been a tough journey, but days like yesterday make it all worthwhile. This was the biggest day of my life."

The 31-year-old believes his unique role in the darts community can inspire future generations, whether they are players, officials, or fans. By breaking barriers and advocating for visibility, Huw aims to foster a welcoming environment for everyone in the sport, especially in its traditionally macho culture.

Reflecting on the changes in darts, he noted, "It has transformed significantly, becoming much more inclusive compared to when I first started. This progress encourages me and gives me hope that the sport can continue to evolve."

Huw’s historic officiating is reminiscent of the influential moments set by other athletes, such as rugby referee Nigel Owens, who publicly came out in 2007. Huw credits Owens as a key source of inspiration, stating, "His achievements made me realize the pinnacle is attainable for someone like me."

He highlighted the ongoing challenges that athletes from the LGBTQ+ community still confront, acknowledging that while strides have been made, more work is needed to ensure inclusivity across all sports. "We see the ongoing discussions and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in sports today. It’s essential for me to be here, breaking down barriers."

Huw also shared a heartfelt message with the younger LGBTQ+ community: "To the gay boys and girls feeling uncertain about their future due to their sexuality: doors are open, and you can achieve greatness in any field you choose. You belong here."

As the PDC Championship concluded, Huw noted a surge in interest for darts among the youth in Wales, illustrating a bright future for the sport. Celebrating his historic role, he remarked, "I look forward to many more finals in the future, but tonight, I’m just glad to have made history."

As the sporting world continues to evolve and embrace diversity, figures like Huw Ware are pivotal in creating a more inclusive environment for all.
